Spring is in the air and it's time to go exploring !!
After heading to Middle Musquodoboit we turned right toward the Eastern Shore.
Just before Mooseland there was a sign pointing toward a muddy dirt road saying "Icelandic Cairn".
What could possibly be up that dirt road halfway between the Eastern Shore and Musquodoboit Harbour (I love knowing how to spell that word!).
Well, below are a couple of pics.
After driving for a while up the muddy road we came across a memorial to an Icelandic Settlement from 1875 to 1882. The marker was established in the year 2000 and was attended by 250 people.
I'm amazed that 250 people found it today - I can't imagine how the Icelandic Settlers come to establish themselves here in 1875 !
In a fitting tribute, the area today is called Markland - the name originally given to it by it's first settlers.
